Wynbrook Farm began in 1985 by Joanne, a successful horsewoman of many disciplines, specializing in the training of young horses, and her husband Gary Brooks, an RCMP Staff Instructor for the Musical Ride. Together, Joanne and Gary brought a lifetime of horsemanship knowledge and experience, and built a structured and professional riding and training program, in Vars.
Joanne Brooks grew up with a passion for horses, and took advantage of any opportunity to learn good horsemanship skills, regardless of the discipline. Joanne has ridden and competed on the Quarter Horse circuit, managed several breeding and lesson barns, bred and shown on the line - notably winning the Lieutenant and Governer General cups, and trained many hunter and dressage horses up to the National level.
Joanne was one of the very first certified coaches with Equine Canada (formerly CEF), and developed one of Ottawa’s most professional and proven riding school programs, Wynbrook Farm.
Gary and Joanne’s children, Taylor – one of Canada’s top professional hunter/jumper riders, and highly successful coach, and Ryan – a police officer and great help during hay season, grew up on the farm. The Brooks family is proud of the warm, friendly and welcoming environment they promote at Wynbrook, and for everyone who walks through the barn doors, is welcomed into that extended “barn family”.
For 32 years, Wynbrook Farm encouraged riders of all ages, and levels of experience to explore their interest in horses through a variety of programs: recreational riding lessons, summer daycamps and for those who wanted to pursue competitive goals, offered a more intensive training program that prepared them for the horse show ring.
Wynbrook Farm soon became a strong contender on the local Primary, Trillium and “A” horse show circuits, producing several Provincial, and National champions in both the Hunter and Equitation rings.
In November 2015, after 30 years in the business, Gary and Joanne officially retired, and handed over Wynbrook’s reins to Taylor. This marked an exciting new chapter for the Brooks family.
Gary & Joanne Today
Happily retired, Gary spends his winters in Wellington, Florida, with Joanne, as she continues to train and compete with her two Grand Prix dressage horses.
Gary continues to spend his summers on the farm, trailering to the horse shows, managing the grounds, and producing top quality hay for our horses.
Joanne, now semi-retired, continues to ride daily, and teaches a few riding school lessons. She is instrumental to our show teams, attending several local Bronze, Silver and Gold shows, offering her assistance and expertise wherever needed.
Joanne is also often seen working on the gardens, walking her dogs, Duke and Lacey, or gathering up our daycamp kids and initiating a fun, high energy activity!
